Oncogene Cancer Research to award two seed grants totalling up to £150k to fund clinical research

Oncogene Cancer Research is committing funds now to accelerate high-impact research for people living with oncogene-driven lung cancers.

This year, we will award two inaugural seed grants of £60,000–£75,000 each, depending on funds raised, to support projects with the potential to improve survival and quality of life.

Our research investment model reflects the communities and donors who have made this possible. That’s why, thanks to the extraordinary support of the ALK patient community, one grant will be dedicated exclusively to an ALK-focused research project.

The second grant is intended to fund a multi-oncogene project — including ALK — addressing shared scientific or clinical challenges across biomarkers such as ALK, EGFR and other oncogene-driven lung cancers. Final scope and funding allocation will be determined by the strength, relevance and scientific excellence of proposals received.

We prioritise research that is scientifically robust, clinically relevant and capable of delivering meaningful patient impact. All applications will undergo a rigorous review process with input from our Medical Advisory Board and research partners to ensure funding is directed where urgency and opportunity align.

In addition, we will establish focused research funding streams for specific biomarkers where donor communities wish to see targeted investment. This ensures that patient-led support directly drives patient-relevant science.

Nearly £100k in donations is supporting the ground breaking work of The Institute of Cancer Research

Our co-founders Jan Clark and Yvonne Diaz have been supporters of the pioneering work of The Institute of Cancer Research. Since 2023, they have contributed close to £100k in donations and gifts. These funds have gone to two important areas:

  • Helping to establish a biobank of oncogene-driven lung cancers, such as ALK+ and EGFR. This biobank provides a structured framework to collect and analyse tissue and blood samples from patients, enabling researchers to study how these cancers become resistant to targeted therapies.

  • A recent donation of over £10k is contributing to the overall work of The ICR including that undertaken by Dr Paul Huang’s lab - read more here.
